The Blood bank at Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute were established in 2008 with a vision of safe and effective transfusion practice, catering to the transfusion emergencies of the rural population of Chengalpattu District. It is run under the joint administrative control of the Medical Superintendent and the Department of Pathology, Shri Sathya Sai Medical College And Research Institute.

The blood bank collects about 5400 units of blood each year through voluntary blood donation camps which are conducted regularly as well as by replacement donations and also provides blood to other rural hospitals if required in times of emergencies.

The blood bank is functioning in strict accordance with the rules and regulations laid down by Government of India and other premier national organizations like National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and is licensed to collect, store and dispense whole blood along with its components. Blood and blood components are screened as per prevailing regulatory guidelines.

The medical officer of blood bank, Dr. Syed Ahmed Hussain and the staff of blood bank had undergone comprehensive training in regional blood banks for advanced blood bank practices.

The blood bank conducts World Blood donor day on 14 th of June of every year by felicitating the regular voluntary donors, conducting poster competition for undergraduate students and raising awareness among the general population for voluntary blood donations.

Services Offered:

  • Blood grouping and typing
  • Blood cross-matching
  • Coombs test (updated method using gel technology now routinely done for all blood cross matches)
  • Coombs crossmatch

Screening tests:

  • Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • Malaria

The above-mentioned screening tests are mandatory and have been prescribed under the guidance of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) which is also the licensing authority.
