Mission:

Our mission is to provide the most state of the art training to undergraduate and postgraduate students through world class advanced excellence in the field of:

  • Application of innovative educational methodologies in teaching and learning
  • Forensic research by contributing new knowledge in the field of anthropometry, psychiatry, toxicology and community Forensic medicine
  • Providing policy assistance in dealing with medico legal cases and encouraging emphatic care in medical practice

The department has highly skilled Faculty who take great passion in teaching and learning activities. Along with undergraduate teaching the department also has one post graduate student. The department also focuses on research work in the field of Forensic Psychiatry, anthropometry, Ethics, Question Documents, community Forensic Medicine & toxicology. The department also provides Consultancy on Medico-legal cases to other clinical departments.

As part of community outreach program the department has undertaken awareness sessions for farmers on safe handling of pesticides and how to identify early clinical features related to occupational pesticide exposure.

The faculties of the department are also actively involved in Leadership roles in the Institutional Medical Educational unit, Curriculum Committee, Examination Process and institutional Research unit.

Enterprising leader who is serving as the Professor & Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Coordinator of the Medical Education Unit and Deputy Controller of Examinations, SBV. I am a Passionate teacher who is conscious of the Adult learning principles and student engagement. I have over eleven years of teaching & research Experience. In Bangalore Medical College I have witnessed over 9000 Autopsies and Medico-legal Cases. I have a keen interest in Medical Education Technology and have completed MCI Advanced Course in Medical Education (ACME), Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Law & Ethics form National Law school, Bangalore and Currently perusing FAIMER Fellowship form GSMC-FAIMER Institute, Mumbai.

PROFILE SUMMARY

I am Dr. Dipayan deb Barman, MBBS,, M.D Forensic Medicine & Toxicology from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences,(An autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health and family Welfare, Government of India). I am presently working as Associate Professor in the department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Shri Sathya Sai Medical College & Research Institute, Ammapettai. After having joined Shri Sathya Sai Medical College & Research Institute in March 2016.

I am involved in student teaching-learning and research activities. In addition to that I am also an active member of the institution’s Medical Education Unit (MEU) and Institutional Research Council (IRC; which reviews the faculty and student research project proposals).

I was part of the departmental team for development of the UG and PG curriculum in the institution. I am also the coordinator for the departmental Facebook page (Forensic Medicine SSSMCRI) which caters to academic discussion for faculty and students.

The department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology has:

Our Infrastructure encompasses

  1. A research laboratory for doing toxicological ,serological research
  2. A practical lab hall for conducting practical classes and as well as practical examination. It has 30 monocular and four binocular Micoscopes.
  3. Fully equipped State of the art mortuary with a cold storage unit for six bodies, a separate dissection area for Autopsy and a viewing gallery for 40-50 students. The mortuary has a separate area for viscera packing, storage & a designated area for the Police & relatives of eth diseased.
  4. A facility for performing anthropometric study ( there is stadiometer, Vernier calipers, weighing machine etc)
  5. State of the art Forensic Museum Housing over 60 Wet Specimens of Medico-Legal importance, 101 Poisons, 40 Photographs, 28 charts and Over 100 weapons.
  6. Two demo halls having a capacity for accommodating 80 (eighty) students for practical demonstration classes.
    • First demo hall has facility of LCD projector and screen for taking classes with audio-visual aid such as power point, video demonstration etc.
    • Second demo hall has a chalk and board facility for taking both theory and practical demonstration classes

1. “Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs – Social, Ethical and Legal Aspects on 28th February 2015 in collaboration with the Mohan Foundation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Define concepts of organ donation
  • Discuss Transplantation of Human Organs Act & its recent amendments
  • Describe the Ethical aspects of organ donation and transplantation
  • Explain the specific challenges in Counseling the family for organ donation and handling the Medico-legal issues involved in such cases.
  • TARGET AUDIENCE–Clinical, para-clinical and non-clinical teaching staff, CRRIs and nursing staff. Others are welcome to attend as well.

Departmental Quiz:

Forensi-quest – Quiz Competition

Intra-college Quiz competition was organized by the department of Forensic Medicine in October 2017. Six teams participated in this event. This competition is designed to encourage the undergraduate students to excel in Forensic Medicine. The competition comprises of six innovative rounds pushing the students to test their Limits.

Academic Services:

The department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology undertakes undergraduate and post graduate teaching in accordance with the best standards of medical education and guidelines as laid down by the medical council of India.

Undergraduate teaching:

  • - For 2nd MBBS (3rd,4th and 5th semester( theory, practical teaching, Problem oriented learning exercises, case based discussions related to Forensic Pathology, Toxicology, Forensic Serology etc)
  • - Periodic Formative assessment examinations as internal/end semester examinations
  • - Post-mortem demonstration exercises –students are taken to Madras Medical College as part of arrangement made between SSSMCRI and MMC

Postgraduate teaching:

  • - Regular theory classes
  • - PG Seminars and journal clubs twice a month
  • - Case based discussions
  • - Emphasis on research and thesis work of the post graduate trainee
  • - Post-mortem demonstration at Chengelpet Government Medical College and Madras Medical College
  • - Regular exposure to cases of clinical Forensic Medicine

Clinical Services:

  • - The department provides medico legal advice to various clinical departments of SSSMCRI in dealing with Medico-legal cases as encountered in day to day medical practice

The Faculty are also involved in various administrative and governance roles like Coordination the University examination, Governance of the Medical Education Unit, Anti ragging Committee & Curricular Governance.

Undergraduate students

MBBS: As a part of the Five and a half year course, we teach Ethics, Medical Jurisprudence, Forensic pathology & Toxicology to the undergraduate students. The teaching learning process involves:
  • - Large group teaching with use of power-points, interactive boards, chalk and board
  • - Self directed learning methods using problem oriented cases, case based discussions, debates to promote critical thinking and analysis ability
  • - Use of social media platforms such as Facebook and Whatsapp. The department of Forensic Medicine of SSSMCRI maintains a facebook group involving faculties and students which promotes academic discussions even after end of conventional teaching activities at the end of college duty hours
AHS Course: We teach Ethics to the BSc Students of Medical imaging technology, Medical Lab technology, Anesthesia Technology, Physician Assistants, Optometry etc.

Postgraduate student: MD Forensic Medicine

The Department is permitted by MCI to take up three Postgraduate Students

  • - Regular PG seminars and journal clubs
  • - Case based discussions
  • - Theory classes
  • - Self directed learning using problem oriented learning exercises
