Department of Pathology

Pathology is one of the most vibrant and lively department of SSSMC&RI. The department is engaged in diagnostic work that caters primarily to SSSMCRI.The department offers comprehensive services in Histopathology, Cytology, Immunohistochemistry, Clinical pathology and Hematology. The department is headed by an enthusiastic pathologist and comprises of a team of both young and experienced faculty which are actively involved in diagnostic work, research, curriculum development, undergraduate, postgraduate and allied health students teaching. Our main focus is to inspire the students to come into the society as good health professionals.

PROFILE SUMMARY

Dr. Dost Mohamed Khan, Professor & HOD of Pathology and Second Year MBBS Coordinator at SSSMCRI. He loves teaching Undergraduates, Allied Health Sciences and Post graduate students.. I am a Postgraduate teacher and researcher with special interest in Histopathology and cytopathology. I enjoy working in Histopathology and in an academically oriented medical institution maintaining high standards of teaching and research. In my future career I would like to teach and mould pathology post graduates. My future plans include focused research in the field of histopathology and medical education leading to doctorate degree.

PROFILE SUMMARY

Dr. Abilash is a Professor in the Department of pathology and vice Principal (Student Affairs) at SSSMCRI. His areas of expertise are histopathology and the cytological evaluation of fine needle aspiration biopsy material. He loves teaching undergraduates and training the Pathology residents.He has more than twenty five research publications in indexed peer reviewed national and international journals of repute and as peer reviewer in many indexed international journals. He has appeared as internal and external examiner for second MBBS students. He is an active member of medical education unit and Institute Research Council of SSSMCRI.

I , Dr .Revathishree have completed MBBS in 2009 at Sree Balaji Medical College, Chennai and MD Pathology in 2013 at Stanley Medical College, Chennai . After completing my MD I have joined as an Assistant professor in the Department of Pathology, Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute in 2013 , got promoted as associate professor in 2017 . After completing my MD I joined as an Assistant professor in the Department of Pathology, Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute in 2015. I became Associate Professor in August 2019 in the same institution. I have undergone Hands on training workshop in “ FISH Techniques in molecular genetics ” at Sri Devaraj URS Academy, Kolar , Karnataka which was sponsored by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (ICMR). I would like to continue pursuing histopathology and haematology with a special interest in neuropathology. I have done about 10 publication in various international and national indexed journals. Facilities

Department of Pathology is equipped with state of the art facilities in including microtomes, tissue embedding station, two five-part hematology autoanalyzers. 

A Comprehensive panel of Immunohistochemistry antibodies is offered for diagnostic care for patients. The college has lecture halls, which are air-conditioned with good seating arrangement for students, proper audiovisual aids like a slide projector and LCD. The Pathology department has two practical halls and two demonstration rooms with a slide projector.

Practical halls are well equipped with laminated charts, histopathology slides, enlarged photography of microcopy, etc. The department has adequate number of  binocular microscope for undergraduates, postgraduates and faculties. Practical halls also have preparation rooms for the storage of chemicals. Museum has 375 specimens well mounted along with catalogues of descriptions.

The Department Library has more than 500 books including reference books for undergraduates, postgraduates, and allied specialities that helps the students.

Undergraduate Medical Training

Pathology Department takes part in the teaching of second year MBBS students as per the IMG norms by MCI.

  • We provide didactic lectures, brief practical sessions, small group discussions with adequate audiovisual aids, which enable a better understanding of concepts to the students.
  • We also provide an opportunity for interactive sessions to students like subject seminars, integrated teaching (horizontal and vertical) sessions in the form of extra care and attention.
  • We also take students to the department museum, show various mounted gross specimens and explain the pathological features on the specimens. 
  • Student enrichment activities are also done by our faculties by participating through Mentor-Mentee program, CREAMS – (For early clinical exposure), SNACS (Student needing extra curriculum support) and SNAPS (student needing extra attention for psychological support).
  • We have also started using LMS (Learning Management System) as a teaching resource and for receiving feedback from students and post study material for them. 
  • We also conduct Intra College quiz periodically every year to facilitate better learning platform for the students.
  • Special lab postings in haematology, histopathology and cytology are allotted weekly for each batch so that students will have an idea about the workflow in the respective subsections.
  • Problem-based learning chart sessions are also conducted in the form of case discussions to improve application skills of the students.

  • We provide an undergraduate course that is unique and in-line with all the governing principles, for producing capable and competent doctors, well oriented with community, national and global health needs. A solid foundation is laid to promote excellence from each student, and to decipher their interests to become the best version of responsible physicians.

Post Graduate Medical Training

  • Three years MD Pathology programme is offered to the postgraduate students, where intense training is provided so that students come out with flying colours.
    Postings for postgraduates, from induction to regular rotational postings are allocated. They are posted in sections like Histopathology, Cytology, Hematology& Clinical Pathology and Blood bank.
  • Postgraduate students are taught to screen the routine histopathology, cytology slides, peripheral smear and bone marrow aspiration slides. They are also exposed to the grossing techniques on various surgical specimens and performing non-guided and guided fine needle aspiration techniques under supervision.
  • Besides, routine daily activities, postgraduate teaching like small topic discussions, seminars, journal club presentations, gross and slide discussions are conducted periodically. Theory formative assessment and end posting tests are also conducted and constructive feedback is provided for further improvement.
  • Regular clinicopathological meets, tumour board meets & Death Audit meets are also conducted to enrich clinical knowledge and for better interdisciplinary correlation and relationships.
  • E-portfolios, in the form of a daily log, are being maintained by the postgraduate students, which add to the uniqueness of this institute, where the postgraduates update their teaching and regular academic activities. They are further monitored by the faculty and constructive comments are given for improvement to the students.
  • Postgraduate research is pursued in the form of dissertations, articles and projects under the guidance of senior faculties.
  • Students are encouraged to do Posters and oral presentation in either National or international CME or Conferences and also in the SAF(Scientific Academic Forum). Further, they are encouraged to publish their research work in indexed journals.

MD – PATHOLOGY

Postgraduate Medicine 3 Seats / Year, The MD pathology course trains the residents in handling and processing histopathology, clinical pathology, microbiology, biochemistry, Anatomy, Transfusion medicine and Forensic Medicine with a knowledge of general principles and methodology.

Nursing and Allied Health Sciences

  • We also train the nursing and allied health science students about the basic concepts of pathology, moulding them to become better health care professionals in future.
  • Second year & Third Year students of the course BSc MLT in the stream of AHS are posted for pathology training.
